Gordon Head Fastball Club (GHFC) is a registered British Columbia Non-Profit Society since 1992, although the history of softball and baseball at Majestic Park dates back many years. The club strives to provide recreational and competitive softball opportunities for youth of all ages.
The current diamond and clubhouse date back to 1989, when a team of parents led by Greg Wynatchuk brought their girls' teams over from then Gordon Head Baseball Association to start a club for the girls. With support from local construction companies and builders, the dream of creating the Majestic Park diamond became a reality.
GHFC is a member of South Vancouver Island (SVI) Minor Fastpitch Association and we are a member in good standing of the BC Amateur Softball Association, which is the official Provincial Sport Organization for Softball/Fastball in B.C.
SOFTBALL AT MAJESTIC PARK:
JOAN MARTIN & LITTLE LEAGUE ORIGINS
According to the Victoria Express newspaper, softball at Majestic Park threw its first pitch on May 7, 1974, when the Saanich Girls' Little League opened its first season. A year later in 1975, Majestic Park was hosting its first major girls tournament. Check out the news articles below for some more softball history at Majestic Park.
A key figure in the Little League getting started at Majestic Park was Mrs. Joan Martin. Joan was originally involved with the Gordon Head Boys Little League Association (now Gordon Head at Lambrick Park Baseball Association) and then started a Little League softball program for girls, which grew to over 300 players. In 1973, she became the first president of a girl's Little League Softball organization in Canada. The diamond at Majestic Park is now named in Joan's honour, in recognition of the many contributions that Joan made to the sport, and to softball at Majestic Park. Joan passed away in 2021 in Kamloops, B.C.
The Club would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support of the Optimist Club of Victoria, whose sponsorship dates all the way back to that 1974 inaugural season! Thank you Optimists!
